THE PROVIDENCE
TRAVEL TEAM!
Welcome to The Providence Travel Team under Next Generation & Futures, non profit. Our focus is the holistic development of the youth - beyond basketball - to learning life skills such as: teamwork, hard work and leadership. Travel provides an outlet for exercise and fitness in the form of basketball combined with life lessons and skills through mentorship. An element of our program is to pair financial literacy and career awareness for holistic development of our young men, the future.

The program was founded by Lanre Ajakaiye, Executive Director in 2019 to give the city youth a platform, ensure state participation and blend sports with life skills and education. In 2020, the first 5th to 8th Graders experienced and were introduced to the importance of Financial Literacy and immersed in Career Awareness which is part of the program. This was taught by community leaders and professionals including: Shomari Husband of Husband Associates, CPA and Marcy Reyes of the Financial Literacy Youth Initiative (FLYi initiative) with sponsorship by BankRI. In 2020, all four teams qualified for the semifinals in 1st to 3rd place across state rankings. Three of the teams made it to the state championships with 5th and 8th grade teams winning the first state championships for Providence in the RIYBA league ever after 25+ years of league formation. In our most recent year of 2022, the 6th, 7th and 8th grade teams won State and New England Championships. Off the court, the young men of Team Providence Travel learned real estate development, financial literacy, non -violence principles and nutrition.

Leadership
Sports is a great place for kids to learn about themselves, lead themselves or the entire team.
Sportsmanship
Sportsmanship is the hallmark of a great program. We seek to teach competing gracefully.
Youth
Our Youth are not only athletes, we care for their well being and greatness as students as well.
Future
Our Youth are the future. The more the interact with youth from all over the state of Rhode Island, the greater we will be as a collective state.
